What Is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure that was formulated to help treat varicose and spider veins. This procedure essentially involves the insertion of a solution directly into the vein, to help irritate the lining of the blood vessel, and eventually collapse it. Sclerotherapy has been used since the 1930s, and since then, has long been a popular and effective procedure for many looking to reduce the appearance of varicose and spider veins.
Prior to any procedure, especially sclerotherapy, patients will have an initial consultation with a dermatologist. Based on a number of factors, your dermatologist will then decide whether you are a good candidate for the procedure. Certain conditions, like a history of blood clots, will prevent you from having the procedure. Women who are pregnant are also prohibited from receiving sclerotherapy performed.
In addition, veins that can possibly be used for future heart bypass surgery will usually not be considered for sclerotherapy, unless they are already labeled as unusable.
What to Expect
Typically, the procedure begins when a board-certified dermatologist injects the FDA-approved solution Asclera® through a thin needle, directly into the vein. At this stage, you may experience some discomfort and cramping for one to two minutes.
Overall, the procedure takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the individual and the severity of the condition. For example, the number of veins that will be injected in one session entirely depends on the size and target area your dermatologist determines best fit.
How Effective is Sclerotherapy?
Many research studies have shown that sclerotherapy has successfully treated 50 to 80 percent of injected veins. In instances that sclerotherapy is not as effective, other alternatives are recommended.
Generally, spider veins will typically respond to treatment within 3 to 6 weeks and bigger veins will take slightly longer. If the veins respond positively to the treatment, they will simply no longer be visible. Though this may be the case, new veins may start to appear which may call for another session.
What Happens After Sclerotherapy?
After your session, you will be able to resume your daily activities, including driving back home from the doctor’s office. You will need to wear a compression hosiery in order to ensure the treatment reaches its maximum potential. If you need heavier compression, department stores will often carry compression stockings that will help you heal faster. If you need a recommendation on where to purchase compression hosiery and leggings, your doctor will be able to properly guide you.
Also, following the treatment, it is best to avoid hot baths, saunas, or direct exposure to sunlight for at least 48 hours for proper restoration.
