As we age, the natural collagen and elastin in the skin lessen as cells lose their ability to produce more of their youthful component. Elias Dermatology® in Ft. Lauderdale and Pembroke Pines, Florida can help rejuvenate their patients by using Botox®.

What is Botox®?
Botox® is used to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the face. Botox® works by paralyzing the muscles beneath the skin, smoothing the exterior appearance. The treatment is frequently used to treat the lines between the eyebrows, on the forehead, and crow’s feet around the eyes. Botox® can also be used to treat muscle spasms like eye twitches, profuse sweating, migraines, and incontinence. Botox® works by paralyzing the sub-dermal muscles and blocking chemical stimulation. Other less well-known areas that can be improved by Botox® include:
- On the jawline, to turn up the corners of the mouth
- Saggy neck muscles called platysma bands
- Around the mouth, to decrease signs of wrinkles
- The chin, to improve the appearance of dimpled, or cobblestone, chin
It is important that before you get into any cosmetic procedure, that you are evaluated as a potential candidate. Botox® is a good option if you have moderate to severe wrinkles, and they are located in areas that Botox® can treat, such as around the eyes or the neck. You should also be in good health and have realistic expectations for progress.
You may not be a good candidate for Botox® if you are allergic to botulinum toxin or any of the Botox® products. Also, if you have any potential skin infections or conditions in the site of injection, this may pose an issue. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have any muscle/nerve condition or have a severe illness or infection, you may not be eligible for Botox®.
What to Expect
A doctor or dermatologist will usually perform Botox® injections in a doctor’s office or a clinic. Your appointment will usually last anywhere between 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the area you are treating.
Your dermatologist may use a cold pack or numbing cream to the areas injected, in order to ensure you are comfortable. A tiny needle will be inserted into the muscles with the Botox® product. The number of injections you receive will vary depending on the severity of your wrinkles and where they are located on your face.
Perhaps the greatest advantage of Botox® is that there is no downtime or recovery period. You will be able to return to normal activities immediately after treatment. Although, it is important that you avoid rubbing areas that were injected as it may cause the botulinum toxin to move to other areas of the face, which will cause temporary facial weakness. There may also be slight bruising in the area of the injection site which will heal rather quickly.
Results should be visible within a few days but may take up to a week to see the final effects. The results will last for about three to four months, during which another session will be due.
How Effective is Botox®?
The effects of the injection last anywhere from three to 12 months. As muscle activity returns, lines and wrinkles will begin to reappear, and follow-up visits will be necessary for continued improvement. Over time, with regular Botox® treatments, the wrinkles will have a less severe appearance as the muscles become trained to relax. Botox® is most effective on wrinkles that appear when the face moves, such as frown lines.
Common Misconceptions about Botox®
Though Botox® is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures, it is often misunderstood. For example, many people will claim that Botox® is only for women, though it is also just as effective for men. Botox® is also not just a one-time thing and requires proper maintenance every few months, as the results are not permanent. It is also important to consider that Botox® does not completely eradicate wrinkles. Botox® does not get rid of all of the wrinkles on your face, but only ones made from expressions. You should have reasonable and realistic expectations as to what results you will have.
Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin
Although Botox® may seem a more prominent or common term, Dysport, Xeomin and Botox® are used interchangeably. All of these prescription medicines are injected into the muscles and function to improve and enhance the look of moderate-to-severe frown lines between the brows. With no surgery or downtime, Botox®, Dysport and Xeomin have been chosen by millions of men and women to get real and noticeable results.
It should also be noted that Revance, a new type of Botox will be coming soon which will provide results for up to six months.
Why Choose Elias Dermatology®?
It is important that anyone considering Botox® see a doctor who is trained and licensed in administering the injections. In the proper hands of the Elias Dermatology® providers, injections can have wondrous effects on your appearance. When you meet Dr. Elias, he will evaluate your facial anatomy to pinpoint specific sites where injections will provide the most benefit. A very thin needle is used, and the injections weaken only the chosen facial muscles that cause wrinkles. Results will begin appearing in a few days, but the full effect of the injections may take up to a week to see. The improvements begin to fade slowly after about three months, although the effects in some areas may last longer.
