Psoriasis Treatment Q&A
What is psoriasis?
Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder that affects the skin. It arises due to skin cells multiplying uncontrollably, and in some cases, the cells multiply up to 10 times faster than normal skin cells. It causes underlying skin cells to push up toward the surface and die, leaving an unsightly and irritating condition.
What is psoriasis caused by?
It is not currently known exactly what causes psoriasis, but it has been determined that the genes that control the immune system are abnormal in psoriasis sufferers. The immune system doesn’t protect the body from invaders; instead, it causes inflammation and overstimulates the production of skin cells. It often stems from hereditary causes.
What are the symptoms of psoriasis?
For many people who have it, psoriasis is merely a cosmetic issue. In some cases, however, it causes severe pain. The volume of skin cells causes red, raised plaque covered with white scales to form. It often looks silvery, depending on the type of psoriasis. It usually forms on the elbows, knees, and scalp, and the patches are often dry and itchy.
The symptoms of psoriasis usually come and go throughout the patient’s life. Symptoms of psoriasis vary depending on each patient, but commonly include the following:
- Dry cracked skin
- Itching or burning
- Red patches of skin covered with silvery scales
- Thickened nails
How is psoriasis treated?
Treatment for psoriasis focuses on clearing the skin of current symptoms with the intent to interrupt the abnormal cycle currently causing an increased production of skin cells. This can be achieved through topical treatment, oral medication, light therapies or a combination of the three. Dr. Matthew Elias and Dr. Merrick Elias strive to help patients with psoriasis by taking every step necessary to find the best approach. Elias Dermatology® utilizes the latest in technology to ensure that patients are comfortable and satisfied with the psoriasis treatment plans.
